Prof. Shahar Frenkel

Prof. Frenkel is a graduate of the Hebrew University and Hadassah School of Medicine.

Prof. Frenkel was an Ophthalmology resident at Hadassah, with sub-specialties in Ocular Oncology and Ophthalmic Pathology from Hadassah and the University of Illinois (UIC) Medical Center at Chicago, IL, USA. 

Prof. Frenkel deals with Ocular Oncology since 2004, and heads the Hadassah Ocular Oncology Unit from 2020. 

Prof. Frenkel specializes in the following fields:

A cataract surgeon, including femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery (FLAC)

Operates on every benign and malignant eye tumor (starting with pterygium and ending with malignant tumors such as melanoma and ocular surface tumors (OSSM, CIN, PAM, melanoma, retinoblastoma and lymphoma)

Performs local radiation plaque brachytherapy, including a special technique to treat eyelid tumors

Ocular ultrasonography

Treats dry eyes, including the use of plugs and IPL

A marine and SCUBA physician – can give medical certificates to participate in SCUBA diving courses, and to return to diving after COVID infections

Ophthalmic pathology – consults on specimens from the eye and its surrounding tissues

In his Hadassah clinic he works with all the insurance companies and all the health organizations (Kupot Holim).

Prof. Frenkel also heads the Ocular Oncology & Ophthalmic Pathology Laboratory. In addition to clinical and basic research, he develops novel diagnostic and therapeutic modalities for various types of cancer, and invented new surgeries to diagnosed ocular tumors and treat them. 

Prof. Frenkel serves as the consultant ophthalmologist for many clinical trials in Oncology and Hematology, and was even selected to serve on the scientific advisory board.
 

His vast experience in treating difficult cancer patients also helps treat patients without tumors who suffer from severe dry eye and difficult cataracts. 

Prof. Frenkel ensures that the most updated techniques and treatment modalities are available for his Israeli and global patients. 

He teaches students, residents and specialist ophthalmologists, and was an invited speaker in international conferences including in England, Greece, Romania and Brazil.
